Abstract

|
|
The lungs´ responses to stressful stimuli traditionally are classified as either inflammation, atelectasis, edema, or bronchospasm. It is now clear that severe systemic insult can result in a diffuse cellular dysfunction of lung parencyma by means of multiple chemical mediators. A discussion of this "acute lung injury" phenomenon and the scientific rationale for present therapy is the subject of this review.
